Poker/Stabbers Where They Least Expect It

Although they’ve been around for many years, I always found a way to poo-poo neck knives. And while I never had a particularly good reason to dislike them — it was more a fear of the unknown — I avoided them my entire career. Some of my reservations stemmed from the idea I could suffer a cut from the chain from which most neck knives hang; and some of it was based on the idea keeping a sharp, pointy thing around my neck (blade pointing at my face) wasn’t a very good idea. But having moved to small town America where there are plenty of lonely roads and woods, I’ve taken the time to get to know and understand the benefits of having a knife hanging from my neck. I had been missing out.

I’ve learned these types of knives come in a variety of sizes and weights; made in everything from solid S30V steel to featherweight titanium, with overall lengths of 3″ to 7″. Depending upon your overall size, you may be able to get away with carrying one with more heft to it than someone of my size. And like knives in general, there’s a wide range of blade shapes, angles of dangles and sheath materials to choose from. You’ll have to try a few on for fit to know what will work best for you. It’s also okay to adjust the chain to the appropriate length for your needs.
What’s so wonderful about a neck knife? For starters, the knife is up high where you just might have your hand while protecting your head and face, making getting to the knife pretty darn easy. Then there’s the element of surprise. People (bad guys) don’t expect you to have another level of weaponry hanging from your neck. Keeping a knife around your neck, tucked behind your uniform shirt allows you easy access to a poker/stabber, should you be in a struggle for your gun. And what a little gem to have while working undercover narcotics or other detail where you’re expected to fit in with the criminal element.

The virtues of a neck knife go beyond your workday too. No matter what you do for exercise, if you go off the beaten path, you’d be wise to have some form of protection with you. While I’m not one for riding my bike or running with a gun in tow because of the added weight and discomfort it causes; a small knife around my neck is a good solution.
