Flying Cross and Vertx, two brands that have become synonymous with quality and innovation in the field of performance uniforms, trace their roots back to their parent company, the Fechheimer Brothers. With a history that spans over 180 years, the Fechheimer Brothers Company has been a prominent figure in the uniform industry since the pre-Civil War era. They were the pioneers in standardizing uniform sizing, a revolutionary step that brought consistency and reliability to the industry. Their lengthy history includes outfitting not only the military but also law enforcement agencies across the country, demonstrating their versatility and commitment to serving those who serve us.

Over the years, Fechheimer’s Flying Cross brand has shaped the way uniforms are made and used within the military, law enforcement, fire, and other markets beyond public safety. Today, as a leading uniform manufacturer in public safety, Fechheimer continues its commitment to excellence with new product designs, advances in fabric technologies, customized solutions, and attention to detail.

Today’s Brands

Today, they offer two distinct brands, Flying Cross and Vertx, each designed to cater to specific needs and missions. Their comprehensive uniform line is meticulously designed to cover a wide range of scenarios. From formal occasions requiring dress uniforms to Class A and Class B uniforms for daily duties, they have it all. Their offerings extend to high-speed tactical gear for SWAT or other tactical operations, designed to provide reliable protection when it matters most.

Garner PD, in North Carolina, was searching for a new patrol uniform that was functional and looked professional. Flying Cross’ Core STAT line met all of their needs.

For operations requiring discretion, they offer low-visibility options suitable for environments like the U.S. Marshals Service. They even provide no-visibility or completely undercover options for narcotics officers or similar roles where blending in is key. In essence, they cover the full spectrum of law enforcement duties.

According to Aaron Silvestain, Director of Brand Development for Fechheimer Brothers, what sets Flying Cross and Vertx apart from other uniform manufacturers is their unwavering commitment to both comfort and functionality. Recognizing that those on the front lines need gear that can keep up with them, they have positioned themselves as leaders in performance stretch uniforms. Over the past few years, they have developed and launched several stretch uniform lines that combine durability with flexibility.

Flying Cross S.T.A.T. Uniform Collection

Flying Cross’ FX S.T.A.T. is a modern duty uniform. It combines the durability, resilience, and strength of synthetics with the comfort of cotton.

The Flying Cross S.T.A.T. Uniform collection is designed with public safety professionals in mind, combining essential components such as premium stretch fabric for mobility, high tenacity for durability, and a modern athletic fit for performance and professionalism. These uniforms are enhanced with technical features for improved comfort, making them a practical choice for demanding jobs.

The S.T.A.T. Uniform collection currently includes two primary lines: F.X. S.T.A.T. and Core S.T.A.T. The collection is expected to expand with three performance stretch fabrics to meet various department uniform needs. Also, it should be noted that Flying Cross will be changing the name of their S.T.A.T. lines down the line.

The Fusion Flex line, from Vertx, is lightweight but tough, ideal for everyday wear.

The F.X. S.T.A.T. line modernizes daily duty uniforms by ensuring lasting stretch, durability, and a modern fit. It uses a premium 5.8 oz. 65/35 poly/cotton mini rip-stop stretch fabric that combines the resilience of polyester, the softness of cotton, and the strength of a mini rip-stop weave. These uniforms maintain a professional appearance while maximizing functionality and comfort.

The Core S.T.A.T. line is constructed with a modern 96% polyester/ 4% spandex blend twill, offering stretch, comfort, durability, and superior color retention. These uniforms are treated with a Durable Water-Resistant (DWR) finish for excellent moisture resistance, preserving their clean and crisp appearance over time. Core S.T.A.T. uniforms, made with performance fabric, are designed to flex with you for unparalleled comfort and range of motion.

Vertx Phantom Flex and Fusion Flex

Incorporating their 37.5® technology, Vertx’s new Phantom Flex line is made from a lightweight stretch poly/cotton mini-ripstop fabric that lets you move freely in any situation.

Vertx has also made significant strides in this area with the launch of two new products this year on their professional side — the Phantom Flex line and their Fusion Flex line. The Vertx Phantom Flex and Fusion Flex are two distinct lines of clothing designed with specific features to cater to different needs.

Phantom Flex is designed for comfort and durability, allowing you to focus on the task at hand. It’s constructed using a lightweight, stretch mini-ripstop poly/cotton fabric that can withstand daily wear and tear without feeling stiff.

The Fusion Flex line provides flexibility where you need it while retaining durability for daily wear. All pieces are constructed using a new stretch poly/cotton blend, keeping the Fusion Flex uniform lightweight and comfortable without losing its durability and toughness. The Fusion Flex line goes a step further by incorporating 37.5® Technology for micro-climate control.

37.5® Technology promotes both active cooling and rapid drying. The “37.5®” represents the concept of maintaining an optimal body temperature and relative humidity next to the skin. Made from naturally derived materials without harsh chemicals to irritate the skin, it disperses body heat. It dries up to five times faster than other performance fabrics, eliminating wet cling and enhancing both comfort and performance.

The 37.5® Technology incorporates materials that help control odor, a common issue with many synthetic fabrics. These materials do not wash out, providing lasting odor control.

Comfort is Key

Flying Cross’ Core S.T.A.T, offers comfortable stretch fabric, durability, and excellent color retention, as well as moisture resistance. The line includes Class A shirts and several trouser or pant designs.

When it comes to uniform functionality, officers can only perform at their best when they are comfortable. Whether sitting in a cruiser for long hours before suddenly needing to engage in a foot pursuit or transitioning from desk work to a vehicle, officers need a uniform that works with them in all scenarios all day long. This is precisely where they are focusing their uniform line. They understand that law enforcement officers face unique challenges every day and need gear that can adapt accordingly.

My experiences confirm their commitment to quality and performance. The products are designed with the end user in mind, resulting in clothing and gear that looks good and performs exceptionally well. These new uniform lines are well-made and show great attention to detail. They are a big step forward in comfort.
