There’s no doubt men commit more crimes and are incarcerated in greater numbers than women. Without going back too far in history, and with some notoriously rare exceptions, women generally committed minor offenses and were incarcerated less frequently. In the early- to mid-1900s, women were placed in “reformatories” or “homes” where they could acquire social graces expected of women in those days — cleaning, cooking, learning how to entertain guests, needlework, etc. Society believed women could be reformed and become more “lady-like” if they mastered these skills. Unless a woman was paired with a male in criminal behavior, she wasn’t considered dangerous. After all, do you think Bonnie would’ve robbed all those banks without Clyde, or Squeaky would’ve risen to infamy without Charlie?
