Mark’s Summary: Black Rain Ordnance’s basic AR-15, the Spec 15, offers police, military, and civilian shooters a solid rifle package for $899. With an adjustable stock, it’s ready to accessorize — say, with an EOTech optic. Just based on features and build quality, the rifle alone should cost a lot more. But it doesn’t. I have high expectations for a day at the range with the BRO.

Never heard of Black Rain Ordnance? From their website: “Black Rain Ordnance, Inc. is a precision firearms manufacturer specializing in the modern sporting rifle design. Founded in 2009 with a benchmark to only manufacture weapons we would personally be proud to own and operate. We’ve sought out the best machinists to turn our ideas into reality with a goal of creating something any gun enthusiast would be proud to not only own but to put on display as well. We strive to use only American metal so that each of our products is truly an authentic American creation.”

Let’s start with the Spec 15’s specs… Receiver: Anodized Forged Aluminum Upper/Lower Receiver Set; Barrel: 16” M4 Profile 4150 Chromoly Barrel (5.56: 1×7 Twist; 300 Blackout: 1X8 Twist); Gas System: Direct Impingement; Low Profile Non-Adjustable Gas Block; Carbine Length

Sometimes we get concerned about buying the “affordable” version of a rifle. I’m not sure there’s any reason for that with this BRO. It’s fit and finish is every bit as good as rifles costing twice as much.
