On A Sound-Proof Door
General Douglas MacArthur said, “There is no security on this earth, there is only opportunity.” He probably didn’t have al-Qaeda or the current generation of self-exploding terrorists in mind, but we shouldn’t doubt his implied intent — proscribing for military and political leaders, post WWII, a positive approach to the world’s security problems. It can be similarly ascribed today, and not just for military leaders. Who seizes these opportunities, and why, are only two of the questions we might ask when discussing the role of private security.
If MacArthur was correct, and there is no security, then opportunities become that much more critical as professionals in the public and private arenas choose and refine their methods of counter-terror.We might identify opportunities as arising from those circumstances which exist, based on a collective cognizance about the Global Jihadism against the West, yielding openings at many levels for concerned entities — i.e. us, the potential target — to protect ourselves. We are in fact in harm’s way, and have been for many years and the perpetrators are known to us. Certainly we can find opportunities in this context. But, do we find them quickly enough, often enough? Do we respond adequately to each?
