Look at the equipment we carried decades ago and compare it with today.

Body armor? Better.
Optics? Hugely better.
Communications? Not even close.
Duty pistols? Better materials, better sights, better ergonomics.
Patrol vehicles? Rolling computers.

What about ammunition?

Rethinking What Makes a Duty Round Work

Liberty Ammunition has been developing ammunition for the government for over 20 years.

They have a new line called Pro Series for law enforcement only. Pro Series was engineered around four key elements:

1. More stopping power

2. Deeper penetration

3. Lighter to carry

4. Controlled penetration

Lead FMJ bullets have stayed basically the same since they were invented in the 1800s. The assumption that lead is the best material and that “heavier is better” deserves another look. Velocity, impact energy, barrier performance and what the projectile does after entering soft tissue all matter.

Liberty Ammunition’s Pro Series 9mm approaches those variables differently, using a 55-grain, lead-free projectile traveling at 2,000 fps. That produces 488 ft.-lbs. of energy — up to 53% more stopping power than some 147-grain bullets.

Kinetic energy is calculated as one-half the projectile’s mass multiplied by velocity squared. Heavier is not necessarily better; velocity matters. What’s more, when the bullet enters soft tissue, pressure within the cavity causes the projectile to rupture. That transfers its energy into the target while reducing the potential for over-penetration. That’s not simply changing bullet weight. It’s reconsidering the job of the projectile. The result is more energy transferred into the target.

Barriers Are Part of the Real World

Law-enforcement encounters don’t conveniently arrange themselves on an unobstructed square range. Vehicles, glass and other intermediate materials can become part of the equation.

Lighter to carry is easy to understand when the bullet is 55 grains and patterned after an AR-15 round.

What about performance? It penetrates glass with less deflection and then travels 12″ plus. Speed helps here as well.

The Pro Series ruptures in soft tissue. The tissue of the threat over-pressures the cavity and causes it to rupture. This creates a hydrostatic shock inside the body. The base of the projectile continues and achieves penetration as well.

Simply put, this stops the threat.

Liberty Pro Series ruptures with significant force in ballistic clay.

The Other Side of the Equation: What’s Behind the Threat?

Here’s the uncomfortable reality of every duty round: You don’t get to stop being responsible for it after the trigger is pressed.

That’s why penetration isn’t the only question. What happens after a projectile enters its intended target matters, too.

Liberty’s design philosophy is to make the projectile rupture in soft tissue and transfer its energy there, reducing the risk associated with a projectile continuing beyond the intended target.

In plain English, the objective is straightforward: stop the threat, not what’s behind it.

No officer or department wants the legal and personal consequences of an innocent bystander being injured.

And Then There’s Weight

A few ounces don’t sound impressive until they’re attached to an officer for 10 or 12 hours.

At 55 grains, Pro Series takes another approach to ammunition weight. Compared with a 147-grain bullet, Pro Series significantly reduces ammunition weight in a fully loaded magazine. That’s a significant weight savings on the duty belt.

Less carried weight plus high velocity is an interesting combination.

It’s Time Ammunition Got an Upgrade

Liberty Ammunition Pro Series 9mm gives law-enforcement agencies another option to evaluate by challenging one of the oldest assumptions in handgun ammunition: that performance has to begin with a heavy lead bullet.

Technology moved on everywhere else.

Why should the ammunition be the exception?
