FAB-2

Fix your weak links.

Cops spend a lot of time in their vehicles and let’s face it, eight (or more?) hours a day scrunched behind the wheel is hard on your body. Try as you might to sit up straight, your postural muscles inevitably fatigue and you end up slumping in your seat. Your pelvis rolls backward, shoulders sag, and your head slides forward. Not only does this position load the discs and ligaments in your spine and chronically tighten your muscles, when you add 25 pounds of gear strapped around your waist you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Statistics show the majority of you reading this are currently experiencing, or have a history of low back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, or tingling in your hands. I’ve treated a number of cops and they all typically have one or more of these problems, with low back pain being the most prevalent. I’ve also noticed cops tend to be extremely stubborn when it comes to doing their maintenance exercises. Here’s the typical conversation:

Me: “Suzi, you need to be doing those exercises I showed you.” Suzi: “I know, but I’m so dang busy and I get home late, I just want to sit down and rest after dinner.” Me: “I know, but if you want to get out of pain you need to do them. It won’t take you more than 10 minutes to get them done.” Suzi: “Yeah, you’re right Doc. I’ll start doing them.”

Do you think Suzi’s going to start doing her exercises? Of course she is — and I’m going to wake up and be the Surgeon General tomorrow. The truth is, I hate doing daily exercises too, but I hate the consequences of not exercising even more. I sprained my Achilles tendon last year and couldn’t do any strenuous activity for a couple of months. Having the physical ability to do pretty much anything I want taken away from me was a horrible experience. By the end of the first week, my dogs were wondering why we weren’t going out to run in the field. Their concern soon turned to irritation, then contempt, and by the end of the second month they were becoming downright hostile.
