LETTER-MUSCELY
Sometimes, it’s okay to support a good cause. We get slammed with pitches to showcase shooting matches, vacation spots, trade shows, softball matches and you name it. We usually beg-off since our space is limited — and where do you draw the line? Well, we draw the line right here with the America’s Strongest Cop competition, benefiting Special Olympics International, under the auspices of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR).
LETR is an initiative founded by Officer Richard LaMunyan along with four fellow officers in Wichita, Kan. in 1981. Since then, the LETR has been raising money to benefit those tough kids in the Special Olympics. In their first year, LETR raised $300, and in 2010, raised $42.6 million — all benefiting the Special Olympics. Today, with some 85,000 LE members, LETR still goes to bat for this great cause.
This new idea, America’s Strongest Cop, is a national competition testing the physical strength and abilities of full-time law enforcement officers. A series of regional competitions (the first was just held in Cleveland, Ohio) will run through mid-August, culminating in a finals event in New York City, crowning America’s strongest law enforcement professionals. The competition provides a significant fund-raising platform for LETR, as participants will drive financial pledges based on their performance throughout the competition. America’s Strongest Cop serves not only as a fun way for cops to compete and stake their claim to this national title, but also to help those hard working kids who participate in the Special Olympics. It’s a great way to get healthy and fit too!
America’s Strongest Cop will feature multiple events, including individual lifts, cardio and endurance tests and a police-themed obstacle course. Participants can train for all events at any local gym, and no special equipment is needed. Competitors will be grouped by weight class, age and gender, and must be full-time sworn officers for a local, state or federal agency. The competition, which kicked off in May, in Cleveland will host events through August in Baltimore, MD; Edison, NJ; Orlando, FL; Charlotte, NC; Dallas, TX; Los Angeles, CA and Chicago, IL.
So get off your duff and register at www.americastrongestcop.com. The entrance fee includes a $10 donation (but give more!) to the Special Olympics on behalf of LETR, commemorative event apparel, a training video and a reserved slot in the regional competition of choice for the first 5,000 applicants.
