I had a conversation the other day with a fellow cop buddy. We were talking about our respective work-related mishaps, specifically on-duty collisions. He was quick to comment that a person “isn’t a real cop until you’ve put one squad car in the junkyard.” My buddy’s a sarcastic guy and his tongue was planted firmly in his cheek when he made the comment. But, it got me thinking.

As a traffic investigator, I’ve handled countless collisions and heard many excuses — some, real doozies. And cops manage to come up with some pretty entertaining excuses for their collisions. What follows are the chronicles of some of the reasons behind your on-duty collisions. Some of them are humorous while others play out as a cautionary tale. You decide.
